091023...Justin Taylor, Elder....“How To See The Temple Of God Today ”...2 Corinthians 6:16

John 2...13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.”
His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple,3 and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

1. The temple was in Jerusalem.
2. The temple was rebuilt by King Herod,

But it was his Solomon who built a permanent temple in Jerusalem, which was beautiful and majestic,

-but it was destroyed.

3. There is only one scene in the NT that is actually inside the Temple
4. The next time we see the Temple is over a year later when Mary and Joseph bring their newborn (less than six weeks old) Jesus to the Temple
5. Now we fast forward 12 years and we see Jesus back at the Temple.
6. Jesus is back at the temple in his thirties.....We see Jesus clear the temple (the Court of the Gentiles, where Money was exchanged to buy animals for sacrifices).
7. Finally, we Jesus in Jersualem eat his final meal with his disciples, pray alone in the Garden of Gesthsame with them only to find them asleep .......
8. Then, three days after they buried him in the newly hewn cold stone tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, Jesus shocked the world by coming back alive again.
9. 37 years after Jesus died, the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70. If you go there today, you will find a Muslim mosque.

So is that the end of the story of the temple in the Bible? Not by a long shot.

1. Jesus is the dwelling place of God.
• Garden
• Tabernacle
• Temple

Colossians 2:9 “In him [Jesus] the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.”

John 2:18–21...So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”

But he was speaking about the temple of his body.

“We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews 10:10

Hebrews 4:14 ...14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Hebrews 9:24... For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

Ephesians 5:2... as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

2. The Church Is the Temple

Ephesians 2:11–12...Therefore, remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands—remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

Ephesians 2:13–18...Ephesians 2:19–22 ... 2 Cor 6:14–16 ... 1 Peter 2:4–5

3. You Individually Are a Temple

1 Cor. 316–17...Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

1 Cor 6:18–20 ...Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

4. We look forward to the ultimate Temple one day.

Revelation 21:22 ... I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.
