Sin Came Into the World - Romans 5:12-21

June 22, 2024 Pastor: Terry Embke Series: God's Transforming Power and Grace

Topic: God's Transforming Power and Grace Passage: Romans 5:12–21

062324...“Sin Came into the World”...Romans 5:12-21

Genesis 1:
V.1— “In the beginning, God created the heavens & the earth.”
V.31— “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.”

Romans 5:12-21...“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For.....

Genesis 2:16-17...“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Genesis 3:6...“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate”

For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man,

Justification:
-An act of God- a sinner is declared righteous!
-The sinner is still guilty of sin
-But God pardons the sinner, though guilty
-Their sin is expunged from their record
-The sinner is no longer under God’s wrath
-Jesus endured the wrath of God against sin
-The sinner inherits righteousness in Jesus’ death

2 Corinthians 5:21...“For our sake he (God) made him (Jesus) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God”

Romans 5:12-21...if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”

Sermon In A Sentence:Jesus Christ gained more for us in His work on the cross than Adam ever lost for us by his sinful disobedience in the garden.

paradise1John Milton Authored:Paradise Lost in 1667-and-Paradise Regained in 1671

Paradise Lost & Paradise Regained:
-All we lost when sin came into the world
-All we gain because Christ came into the world
-All grace needed for change is available to us

Romans 8:20-22...“For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.”

Ephesians 2:4-6...“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus”

2 Peter 1:4...“He has granted to us his precious & very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world”

Ephesians 4:22-24...“Assuming that you have heard about him (Jesus) and were taught in him, as the truth is in Him, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness”
