Topic: Study of the Life of Christ Passage: Matthew 12:1–14
120422- “When Is It Lawful To Do Good?”... Luke 19:10
Jesus: “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to
save the lost”... Matthew 12:1-14
Sermon In A Sentence: Jesus teaches that God has always been more concerned that mercy is shown to people than rules be followed.
Matthew 12:1-6...“At that time Jesus passed through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick and eat some heads of grain. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, ‘Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!’ He said to them, ‘Haven’t you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry— how he entered the house of God, and they ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests? Or haven’t you read in the Law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent? But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here!”
The More Time We Spend With Jesus:
-The more we feel freedom in His liberating grace (v.1-6)
-The more we will embrace mercy over sacrifice (v.7)
-The more we will submit to Jesus’ Lordship (v.8)
-The more we will do good at every opportunity (v.9-14)
Matthew 5:17-18...“Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For I assure you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all things are accomplished.”
Matthew 12:7...“If you had known what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent.”
Hosea 6:6...“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings”
Matthew 12:8...“For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
John 5:18...“This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God”
Romans 10:9..."Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
Matthew 12:9-14...“Moving on from there, He entered their synagogue. There He saw a man who had a paralyzed hand. And in order to accuse Him they asked Him, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?’ But He said to them, ‘What man among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn’t take hold of it and lift it out? A man is worth far more than a sheep, so it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath.’ Then He told the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ So he stretched it out, and it was restored, as good as the other. But the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.”
