080722-“Going The 2nd Mile”...Matthew 5:38-42...“You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I tell you, don’t resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to the one who asks you, and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

Sermon In A Sentence: Whenever we are exploited, we must see it as an opportunity to reveal that the Spirit of Jesus indwells us.

Jesus Teaches That The Spirit of God’s Law Requires That We:
-Choose against inflicting personal revenge
-Choose to set aside claims of personal rights
-Choose not to demand personal respect
-Choose not to hold tightly to our possessions

Exodus 21:23-25 “If there is an injury, then you must give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, bruise for bruise, wound for wound”

Leviticus 24:19-20 "If any man inflicts a permanent injury on his neighbor, whatever he has done is to be done to him: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Whatever injury he inflicted on the person, the same is to be inflicted on him”

Deuteronomy 19:21 “You must not show pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot”

Romans 13:4 “For government is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For government is God’s servant, an avenger that brings wrath on the one who does wrong”

Matthew 5:39 -“…don’t resist an evildoer…”
-Resist: “to set one’s self up in opposition”
-“Don’t set yourself up in opposition”
-Jesus Is Saying: “…you have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I tell you, don’t set yourself up in opposition to an evildoer”

1 Peter 2:23 “When He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He was suffering, He did not threaten but entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly.”

Philippians 2:5-8 “Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross”

Philippians 3:20 “For our citizenship is in Heaven from which also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ”
