July 23, 2022 Pastor: Terry Embke Series: The Life of Jesus Christ

Topic: Study of the Life of Christ Passage: Matthew 5:31–32

072422...“Jesus’ Word On Divorce”...Matthew 5:31-32...“It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce. But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery”

Sermon In A Sentence: Because Jesus condemns divorce we must choose a marriage partner wisely & build safeguards into the relationship.

Regarding Divorce & Remarriage:
-Jesus confirms God’s original design for marriage
-Jesus concedes the limited grounds for divorce
-Jesus’ blood offers forgiveness for divorce

Deuteronomy 24:1...“If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds something improper about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house”

Matthew 19:3-6...“Some Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?’ ‘Haven’t you read,’ He replied, ‘that He who created them in the beginning made them male and female,’ and He also said: ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate.’”

Matthew 19:7-9...“‘Why then,’ they asked Him, ‘did Moses command us to give divorce papers and to send her away?’ And, He told them, ‘Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of the hardness of your hearts. But it was not like that from the beginning. And I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality & marries another,
commits adultery”

Matthew 5:32...“But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery”

Mark 10:7-9...“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate”

Matthew 26:28...“For this is My blood that establishes the covenant; it is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

1 John 1:7,9...“But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin… If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”

Ephesians 1:7...“We have redemption in Him through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace”

Revelation 1:5...“From Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and has set us free from our sins by His blood”
